When I think back to my favorite memories of people, places, and things–life experiences, I have learned that what we love the first time is rarely duplicated or enhanced the second time. I think that is because that encounter was meant to change us.
Once we are transformed by the revelation, the conversation, the circumstance, the charged moment, we are left with an indelible mark. We have learned something about ourselves, others, life, and those valuable gifts are now a permanent part of our person.
Something menial like a favorite movie, you may argue, isn’t worth that kind of consideration. How can a movie transform you?
Well, if you have the time, please take a moment to read further about my personal experience and why I would never be able to erase the movie and watch it again as the same person.
My Favorite Movie
My favorite movie was directed based on the story of real-life moot court competitions held at Patrick Henry College, a Christian liberal arts school in Virginia. Although it was a pure love story, it was also a story that spoke volumes about the sanctity of life. The movie, directed by George Escobar and Manny Edwards was called, “Come What May.”
The movie transformed me deeply and placed a fire in my heart for life!
The Backstory
In the early 90’s, while I was in my BA program at the university as a freshman, I had many conversations with my peers on the controversial topic of….
Because I thought I was so clever, such a mediator, I made up my own definitions and rules and decided to argue on the side of being “pro-choice” for one reason only: God is a pro-choice God–He allows us to choose whether we will choose life or death. After all, Moses said it this way in Deuteronomy 30:19:
“This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.”
But, in 2009, I watched the movie, my favorite movie, and for the first time, I realized that Roe v. Wade had to be overturned. I just knew it. And, I knew that I was wrong. I was never “pro-choice” because the heart of God was never “pro-choice.” If we read the above call from Moses, we can see that he clearly reveals God’s heart: “Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.”
Well, I was an English teacher back in those days. Little did I know what my next steps would be, but eight years later, I was no longer teaching English. Instead, I would be enrolled to get my master’s in government program, where I would be working tirelessly on my first solid research study on Roe v. Wade. What I found was so eye-opening. I placed my findings in this paper.
So, Today
I could never go back and erase that movie from my memory. It changed me. As a result, I ended up getting a new degree, and I wrote a paper. And, whether people are for or against it (as the controversy still continues), Roe v. Wade was exposed for the judicial activism it was federally, and the case has been overturned at the Supreme Court.
It wouldn’t make sense to watch the movie afresh again now as if it were my first time seeing it because what was impossible was made possible, and our world is different today, and so am I.
I am convinced that the movie was part of my destiny, not just something to value for the moment. It became a part of my calling, and through it, God showed me the Truth.
Today, I am Pro-Life. I serve a Pro-Life God. He gave His Right Arm, Jesus Christ, to save all our lives. Selah.
I hope that you have a wonderful day, and that no matter where you are in your convictions and beliefs, that you will know that God loves you, and He is still asking us all to choose Life, to choose Him.
Blessings to you!
Christine ❤
